Theremia Raises €3 Million to Optimize Drug Efficacy and Safety
7 November 2024
Theremia, a french deeptech company specializing in precision medicine, announces a €3 million seed funding round led by Eurazeo and Salica Investments, with participation from Entrepreneur First, Tiny VC, and renowned business angels. Theremia is developing an artificial intelligence platform to optimize drugs by accounting for interindividual differences within populations. This funding will enable the start-up to strengthen its team of nine scientists and enhance its algorithm’s efficacy through partnerships with medical institutes.
Tailoring Treatments to Population-Specific Needs for More Effective Care
Theremia addresses a persistent issue in the healthcare industry: the standardized approach to treatments that fails to account for significant pathophysiological differences among patients, leading nearly 60% of them to discontinue treatment. Using an AI-powered platform and multi-scale models, Theremia adjusts elements such as frequency, dosage, and drug formulation to improve efficacy while significantly reducing side effects. This approach enhances patient adherence to treatments by offering care tailored to their unique needs.
A Robust and Validated Scientific Framework
Theremia’s model is based on solid scientific foundations. By combining data science, artificial intelligence, and the latest advances in pharmacology, the company is positioning itself as a leader in accelerating drug development and repurposing existing treatments. Theremia works closely with practitioners specialized in each pathology studied to ensure the algorithm accurately captures the determinants of each disease and produces scientifically consistent results. The company is establishing public-private partnerships across all central nervous system pathologies, beginning with Parkinson’s disease, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, and multiple sclerosis.
“Our scientific approach is built on strong collaboration with clinicians, academic researchers specializing in our focus areas, and stakeholders in the pharmaceutical industry,” explain Theremia’s co-founders, Iris Maréchal (CEO) and Chloé Geoffroy (CTO). “By integrating their feedback throughout the process, we continuously refine our models to ensure results are both robust and clinically relevant. These partnerships are essential for validating our hypotheses, refining our models, and ensuring optimized treatments meet the actual needs of both the industry and patients.”
A Key Challenge for Drug Developers
Today, pharmaceutical companies must provide precise data to demonstrate the positive impact of their treatments on specific populations, thereby strengthening the confidence of regulators and payers. Theremia facilitates the collection of real-world data (RWD), enabling companies to showcase their commitment to “Value-Based Healthcare” and assure patients that the treatments offered truly meet their unique needs.
A Complementary Founding Team
Theremia is led by a management team that combines scientific and strategic expertise. Iris Maréchal, a former BCG consultant with a specialisation in mathematics and public health, and Chloé Geoffroy, a pharmacist, engineer, and neuroscientist, lead scientific research. Theremia currently has around ten employees, primarily from technological and scientific backgrounds.
Theremia is also supported by BPIfrance, BetterAngle, Agoranov, the DayOne incubator in Switzerland, and numerous industry leaders who have become business angels. The funds raised from Eurazeo and Salica reflect investors’ confidence in Theremia’s potential in precision medicine.
“Theremia offers an innovative solution to the R&D efficiency and long-term profitability challenges faced by drug developers, with a unique algorithmic approach rooted in real-world data. Complementing traditional theoretical and clinical methods, Theremia promises new efficacy-risk balances for the pharmaceutical industry. Eurazeo, through its HEC Ventures fund, is proud to support Iris, Chloé, and their team in advancing this essential technology for the sector,” said Maxime Huerre, Vice President of Eurazeo’s Digital Health Venture team.
“The technical and commercial expertise of Iris and Chloé was clear from our first meeting, and we are proud to support Theremia’s mission to help pharmaceutical companies maximize the impact of their R&D investments. By expanding markets for their drugs and improving their efficacy, they have the potential to impact billions of people worldwide. We are excited to invest alongside Eurazeo and look forward to seeing Iris and Chloé revolutionize medicine,” stated Nick Sharp, Partner at Salica Investments.
